Early Water Supply Solutions in Rome

With the development of the first raised aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, individuals who lived on the city’s hills no longer had to be dependent strictly on naturally-occurring spring water for their needs. If residents living at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to rely on the other existing techniques of the time, cisterns that collected rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from under ground. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique program was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sections to provide water to Pincian Hill. Through its initial building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were installed at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. During the some 9 years he possessed the property, from 1543 to 1552, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi used these manholes to take water from the channel in containers, though they were initially built for the goal of maintaining and servicing the aqueduct. He didn’t get sufficient water from the cistern that he had manufactured on his residential property to collect rainwater. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his residential property.
