Gardens of Chatworth: The Revelation Water Fountain

r-119__64318.jpg Designed by popular British sculptor Angela Conner, Revelation is the newest addition to the Chatsworth ornamental outdoor water features. In celebration of the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration, she was mandated by the late 11th Duke of Devonshire to make a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth designed of brass and steel in 2004. Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s most venerable ponds, had “Revelation” put up in 1999. Taking the shape of four big flower petals that open and close with the circulation of water, the metallic fountain alternately conceals and displays a golden globe at the center of the sculpture. A steel globe decorated with gold dust was integrated into the sculpture, which stands five meters in height and five meters wide. The petals move depending on the circulation of water, making this installation an exciting addition to the Gardens of Chatsworth.

If you want to put yours against a wall, there are fountains designed expressly for this purpose. To attach one against a wall, look for a bar or hook on the back made specifically for this purpose. Since the top part of your fountain is unstable on its own, make certain that it is secure against a wall to avoid damage caused by strong winds, wild animals, or other natural hazards.

The garden sculpture style, yet another possibility, is perfect for parks or any place people tend to hang out to enjoy the fresh air and vistas.

Ancient Greece: Cultural Sculpture

Nearly all sculptors were paid by the temples to adorn the intricate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods up until the period came to a close and countless Greeks began to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more common for sculptors to portray everyday men and women as well. Affluent individuals would occasionally commission a rendition of their ancestors for their big family tombs; portraiture also became prevalent and would be appropriated by the Romans upon their acquisition of Greek civilization. A point of artistic progression, the use of sculpture and other art forms transformed through the Greek Classical period, so it is inexact to say that the arts served only one function. Greek sculpture is probably enticing to us today because it was an avant-garde experiment in the ancient world, so it doesn't matter whether or not its original purpose was religious zeal or artistic pleasure.

A Fabulous Example of Roman Artistry: The Santa Maria in Cosmedin Water Fountain

Both Christian and pagan artifacts have been found in large quantities by archaeologists and restorers searching the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The celebrated marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) can be seen in the portico of the basilica nearby. Since the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was located off the beaten track, it remained relatively unknown. It was said that there was very little to see in this area because it was abject and desolate making it an unfriendly place to visit. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI mandated the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a water fountain to modernize the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The job of laying down the church’s foundation started on August 17, 1717. The consecration of the first stone to be placed in the foundation was followed by medals being tossed in showing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water.
